He first married Rosetta "Rose" Ames on 1 July 1877, Vinalhaven, married by Watson H Vinal. Rose was b Oct 1858, North Haven, the d/o Capt Robert "Bob" M Ames & Hannah Thomas. She d 28 July 1883, Vinalhaven. They had no known children. John married second to Olivia Adkins Miller on 4 Aug 1885, Rockland, Me. Olivia was b 9 Sept 1860, Rockland, the d/o Parker Miller & Abbie Worth. She d 16 May 1908, Vinalhaven. John & Olivia had 3 children, all born Vinalhaven: 1. William Henry Bray: 18 Mar 1888 - after 1940, Vinalhaven 2. Hazel D Bray: 1891 - between 1931 - 1940, Rockland 2. Lucy F Bray: 20 Feb 1902 - 23 Apr 1985, Camden, Me. In 1870, 16-year-old John is residing with his family on Vinalhaven where he is working as a fisherman. At the time of his 2nd marriage, John is of Vinalhaven with his wife, Olivia, of Rockland. 11 Sept 1872, Deed of Personal Property from Robt Ames to Rosetta Ames: convey unto my said daughter Rosetta Ames all and singular the goods and chattels contained in the following schedule, marked and numbered therein, specified and set forth. To wit: 1 Bureau (No 1, marked R A on the back), 6 chairs (No 2 to 7, marked R A under the bottom), 2 Feather beds (No 8 to 9, marked R A on the side), and Clothes for making up of the same on the margin. 1 Gold Necklace (Marked R A on the ribbon), 2 Looking Glasses (No 11 to 12, marked R A on the side), 1 Tea Set (No 13, marked R A on the side of each piece), 2 Tables (No 14 to 15, marked R A under the leaf), and every article of goods and chattels of every name and nature belonging to her deceased mother, late of North Haven. To have and to hold the above described goods and chattels to her and repudiate (?) from the interference and controll [sic] of her future husband and to her heirs and assigns to their own use forever. In the presence of Eleazer Crabtree. Marriage Announcement Abstract: John H Bray, of Vinalhaven, m 1 July 1877 at Vinalhaven, Rose E Ames, of North Haven. Published 12 July 1877. In 1900, John is a fisherman on Vinalhaven. He and Olivia have been married for 15 years. She cites she had 3 children, two of whom were still alive for the census. Death Record: Olivia A Bray died on 16 May 1908 on Vinalhaven at the age of 47 years 8 months 7 days. Born in Rockland, she was the daughter of Parker Miller (born Warren, Me, laborer) and Abbie Worth (born Howland (?)). She was the wife of John H Bray. Cause of death; chronic endocarditis. Obituary: John H Bray, 72, a widely known resident of this town, died on Friday. He is survived by a son, William, and two daughters, Mrs Hazel Hutchinson and Mrs Guy Sawyer. Funeral services were held on Sunday, with internment in Bay View Cemetery. Portland Press Herald, 24 Feb 1926. On 15 Sept 1908, Daniel H Glidden was appointed administrator of Olivia Bray's estate. Knox Co Probate File Number 6274. On 26 Feb 1926, William H Bray was appointed administrator of John H Bray's estate. Knox Co Probate File Number 10176.
