OCKLAND – Valerie F. Smith, 80, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport after an extended illness. Born in Rockland, June 15, 1933, she was the daughter of Kenneth D., Sr. and Maude Keizer Feyler. She attended schools in Thomaston.
Valerie married Maynard Smith, Jr. and the couple made their home on Limerock Street in Rockland.
For a number of years Valerie volunteered at the former Knox Hospital in Rockland and then Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport. She ultimately worked at Pen Bay and retired from the medical center.
When her children were younger, she was a Girl Scout leader. From October to December each year, she would be making Christmas wreaths to sell, providing a wonderful Christmas for her children. She also enjoyed camping with the Dragon Cement Plant families for many years, especially the trip to Expo '67 in Canada.
Valerie enjoyed knitting, quilting, working in her beautiful flower gardens, and visiting her family.
Predeceased by her husband Maynard, her parents, and her brother Kenneth D. Feyler, Jr., Valerie is survived by her children, Robert W. Smith and his wife Cheryl of Rockville, Wanda Leavitt and her husband Gregg of Carmel, Karen Harris and her husband Gary of Hubbardston, MA, Stuart Smith and his wife Holly of Rockport, Mary Wall and her husband Randy of Ellenton, FL, Rebecca Lothrop and her husband Linwood of Rockland; eight grandchildren, Shane Smith, Laurie Camire, Katie Rothfield, Alisa Roman, Karen Rackliff, Susan Rackliff, Michael Lothrop and Jennifer Curtis; along with several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Erma Landry, Margaret Smith and Joanne Feyler.
Friends and family are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday, November 11th at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday. Reverend Seth Jones will officiate. Interment will be at Achorn Cemetery, followed by a reception at 104 Limerock Street. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home)
